Fundada en 1928 como Dobroflot, esta compañía fue reorganizada como Aeroflot en 1932. Durante la era soviética, Aeroflot fue la aerolínea más grande del mundo, con un 15% del total del tráfico aéreo civil. Después de la desintegración de la Unión Soviética, en 1991, Aeroflot perdió el monopolio de la aviación comercial en los ex estados soviéticos. En junio de 2000 se le rebautizó con el nombre de Aeroflot-Russian Airlines.
